The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the US president commenced revealing everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, across decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense about him because they identify as atheists or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The evident and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels calls for a kind of radical love focused on the poor is what has always made Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it practically blessed current circumstances.
