A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
