The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, but then he admitted that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this year. He was on last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad with no new signings.
He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
